Oh boy, don't get me started on my phone adventures!

I never had to ask about phone numbers in NYC, because Bell had an automated line that read back the number you were calling from. All I had to do was dial 958. This was useful for getting a call on a payphone for which you had no idea what the number was.

I also lived close to Grand Central Station, and used a trick to get money out of the payphones. I would disconnect the green wire, then come back the next day and reconnect it. I tried it on a single phone (they had dozens) and came back the next day, reconnected the green wire. Once the phone came back online it would 'refund' all the quarters put in. This one phone spit out over $20 in change, ca-ching!

I feel kinda bad now, but at the time I needed cigarette money, I mean they were 75 cents a pack!
