I miss text games (including ones with graphics, and the Humongous series as well). I have a kid with some sensory processing issues. He gets easily frustrated by reflex driven games. Aside from the fact that death is way too easy in most of the classic text games, I think he would enjoy it.

Humongous had great kid games! How old is he? Have you tried www.EscapeTheGloomer.com and playing together perhaps?

He's almost 9. We bought the entire Humongous pack, I really wish they made more of Spy Fox - He wasn't ready for Monkey Island when we started, but he's too old for Putt Putt and Freddi Fish now. We'll definitely check out Escape the Gloomer - he's a huge Redwall fan.

At 9 it might be a good game to play with him as a team perhaps. He may not have the maturity level to do it alone yet.

And I can't tell you how mad I was about that stupid squirrel when I was a kid.

LOL, sorry about that. I can only imagine how you felt and I apologize in retrospect.

I miss text games as well. There was just something so satisfying about them. I’ve played Adventureland XL and made it into the new areas. Lemme tell you it’s just as challenging and exciting to get stuck trying to solve these new puzzles as it was when I was 7 or 8 and playing on my Vic-20.

Have you made use of the built-in hint system at all? If so any thoughts on it?

I have used the hint system. It does a great job at leading you in the right direction without giving away the answers. It’s been a few months since I played the game, but if I remember correctly it’s not really a puzzle so much as figuring out what I’m supposed to do next that has me stuck.

The system should be helping with that as well. Can you tell me the name of the player you used? Perhaps play it briefly again and try getting a hint? I can look at trace files and see if the system was working properly for you.

Great interview and opportunity.

Felt the need to revisit this. We're playing Monkey Island - in addition to SPD, he's also Aspergers. Some of the puzzles resulted in frustration. Still learning when frustration is too much and when it's a growth experience, but MI gets a little dark toward the end (Dad fail, I'd never played this one. Navigator head, cannibals, the underground maze.... whups), and I think that might've had something to do with it.

ASMR Adventure isn't really a category, but it needs to be. Self paced, long play exploration. Myst seems kinda like that but I never played far, and it's a little too hard for him. We have appreciated the depth of MI compared to Spy Fox, but the macabre and difficulty is just a bit much. frustration.
